Ringgit up if Najib out, says Mahathir
Former premier says own research shows everything will be all right if Najib is gone.
(Free Malaysia Today) – Dr Mahathir Mohamad says the value of the ringgit will improve if Prime Minister Najib Razak, steps down.
“Everything will be all right if Najib is gone. As long as he is still present the problems will never be solved,” he said at a high-tea public forum organised by the Umno branch in Pusat Bandar Taman Cempaka at a hotel in Ampang here today.
He said the problems surrounding the government’s investment arm, 1Malaysia Development Bhd, and a controversial US$700 million (RM2.6 billion) donation to Najib’s personal bank accounts, had caused the ringgit to fall in value.
The former premier said he based his confidence on his own research, and on what Bank Negara Governor Zeti Akhtar Aziz said recently, that as long as current problems were not solved the ringgit will not improve. “It means if Najib steps down, our currency will improve,” Dr Mahathir said.
He then drew laughter from those present when he sarcastically reassured them and told them not to worry. “Najib is an economics expert and he said the economy is stable. He knows better because he studied economics and I was only a doctor who prescribed medicine,” he said.
