No contact from FBI on investigating 1MDB or PM, police chief says
(Malay Mail Online) – Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar refuted today allegations that the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) had contacted Bukit Aman for information on troubled state-owned 1 Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) or Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.
He noted that rumours claiming the Malaysian police had been contacted by the US federal investigators had been circulating on social media, but urged those with questions to contact the FBI directly instead of referring solely to media reports on the matter.
“The Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) have never received any notice related to any alleged investigation by the FBI.
“The agency involved also did not apply for any aid from PDRM on the same matter,” he said in a brief statement.
1MDB is under investigation for corruption and mismanagement domestically as well as by various authorities in several countries, including Hong Kong, Switzerland and the UK.
The allegations of corruption and mismanagement have also spilled over to Putrajaya, after US-based Wall Street Journal linked Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak to US$700 million allegedly moved through entities connected to 1MDB.
The prime minister has also denied using any public money, including from 1MDB for personal benefit, though questions have mounted over the source and purpose of the funds.
International attention increased after 1MDB critic Datuk Seri Khairuddin Abu Hassan went on a global tour to solicit investigations by other countries into 1MDB.
The former Penang Umno leader was arrested last month ahead of a trip to New York to file another report against 1MDB and Najib with the FBI.
He is currently detained under an anti-terror law for 28 days, but was hospitalised last week after contracting dengue.
