Minister says giving the impression that 1MDB broke rules and regulations is hurting the central bank’s integrity.

(Free Malaysia Today) – Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) is not doing itself any favours by making “reckless accusations” about 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) in regard to the issue of providing relevant information for a remittance, said Rahman Dahlan in a tweet last night.

The minister of Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government was referring to comments by BNM Governor Zeti Akhtar Aziz that seemed to suggest that 1MDB had breached the bank’s Exchange Control Act.

“BNM is a respected institution. Reckless accusation is not helping its integrity which by the way the governor told us must be protected.”

Rahman, who is also Barisan Nasional Strategic Communications Director thanked Attorney-General Mohamed Apandi Ali for clearing the air about what actually transpired as it proved that 1MDB did indeed do everything by the book as opposed to what was implied by Zeti.

“Thank you to the AG for clarifying that 1MDB indeed follow procedures and did not break any laws as claimed by the Governor of BNM.

In a statement yesterday, the AG confirmed that 1MDB officials had at all times during the material process i.e. during the process of obtaining permission for remittance, complied with directions given by BNM, resulting in the permissions/approvals that they were eventually granted by the central bank.

“So it seems 1MDB did comply to BNM’s requirements. Why did the BNM Governor give us the impression that 1MDB broke BNM rules & regulations?” Rahman asked.
