MPs must vote down all government motions, says DAP lawmaker
(TMI) – DAP lawmaker Steven Sim has urged parliamentarians to vote down every government motion in the Dewan Rakyat, should it refuse to move up PKR MP Hee Loy Sian’s motion of no confidence on Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.
This would signal that they have no confidence in Najib’s administration, said Sim, the Bukit Mertajam MP.
“If the government does not allow Petaling Jaya Selatan MP’s motion to be moved up, I call on all conscientious members of Parliament from both sides of the aisle to vote down every single government’s motion to demonstrate our no confidence in Najib Razak’s administration,” said Sim in a statement today.
The motion, proposed by Hee, was listed as the 25th item in the Parliament’s order paper, and Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Azalina Othman has said that government matters will be given priority over private members’ motions during the seven-week meeting which begins today.
But Sim argued that the no-confidence motion should be moved up because established convention states that such a motion should take precedence.
“According to a UK Parliament report on Fixed-term Parliaments Bill, ‘a motion of confidence should take precedence over other motions’,” said Sim.
He also claimed that the no-confidence motion threw the upcoming budget’s legitimacy into question.
“How can the prime minister’s Supply Bill be legitimate if his administration is hanging on the thin thread of being ousted in the House?”
