Cops, MCMC also raid Star Online office

(Bernama) – The Star Online was also raided by the police and the Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) today at the same time as news portal Malaysiakini over a report on the transfer of a deputy public prosecutor attached to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).

Kuala Lumpur Criminal Investigation Department head Zainuddin Ahmad said the raid was conducted following a report by an officer from the Attorney-General’s Chambers last Tuesday.

“The officer claimed that the report tarnished the good name of the agency (Attorney-General’s Chambers),” he said when contacted by Bernama tonight.

Zainuddin said the police and officers from MCMC went to the office of the two news portals in Petaling Jaya at about 6pm.

“Investigation was conducted under Section 112 of the Criminal Procedure Code on articles published by them and to identify the editors involved to record their statements,” he added.

Meanwhile, Malaysiakini editor-in-chief, Steven Gan (pic), when contacted by Bernama said Malaysiakini was willing to cooperate with the authorities at any time.

He said more than 10 officers from MCMC and the police raided the office and questioned the editorial staff for about three hours.

“A computer belonging to the company was also seized to facilitate investigation,” he added.

Last Monday, a news portal reported on the transfer of a MACC deputy public prosecutor who was involved in the arrest of several witnesses in the probe on SRC International Sdn Bhd.

On the same day, MACC Investigation Director Azam Baki denied the report on Ahmad Shazalee’s transfer and said that the deputy public prosecutor was still with the commission and was given a promotion.
