Najib plans to give statement on RM2.6b to MACC soon
PM says he wants to cooperate with the authorities especially since the political donation has become a scandal both nationally and internationally
(Free Malaysia Today) – Prime Minister Najib Razak has said he will give his statement to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) soon regarding the RM2.6 billion political donation he received years ago.
In a statement posted on his official Facebook page today, Najib said Attorney-General (AG) Apandi Ali had already notified him about the matter.
“I will do so and give my statement to MACC soon regarding the political funding. I will give my cooperation and statement to MACC so that the investigation can be completed as soon as possible,” he said.
Najib also said he was more than willing to cooperate with the authorities because the issue of the political donation had caused an uproar both at the national and international levels.
“It is my wish to give my full cooperation on this investigation since it has caused many accusations and allegations,” he added.
The scandal erupted after The Wall Street Journal published a report on July 3 that nearly USD700 million (RM2.6 billion) had been deposited into Najib’s personal banking accounts before the last General Election in 2013. The report also alleged that the money had come from 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB).
Following this, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) issued a statement that the money was a donation from an Arab donor.
