(FMT) – PKR and Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) lawmakers are going to legally challenge a new law, tabled and gazetted by the Terengganu government this year that enables the state Umno to take ownership of Malay reserve land.

In a report by The Rakyat Post, PKR’s Bandar Terengganu state assemblyman Azan Ismail said the amendments were tabled in May this year and gazetted two months later.

Speaking to reporters at Parliament lobby yesterday, he also said he was the only lawmaker to object to the amendments made in Section 9 of the state’s Malay Reserve Land Enactment while all others, including those from PAS voted for the changes.

“I’m worried that this new law will be a precedent and open the flood gates, allowing other states to also allow Malay reserve land ownership to be transferred to political parties,” Azan said.

A copy of the Terengganu assembly Hansard, sighted by The Rakyat Post, showed that Menteri Besar Ahmad Razif Abdul Rahman defended the amendments, stating it was necessary to protect Umno’s interests.
