Why has PAS declared itself opposition in Penang, not Selangor?

(Bernama) – While PAS has decided to become an opposition in Penang, many analysts believe the party must do the same in Selangor, as well.

Political analysts are of the opinion the party should be consistent and adopt the same principle in all states.

Political, Security and International Relations Cluster of the National Professor Council secretary, Prof Datuk Abdul Halim Sidek said PAS should make its stand to be an opposition in Selangor, or join the new opposition alliance known as Pakatan Harapan.

“The fact is, PAS has helped both the Selangor and Penang governments and I’m confident that if PAS is no longer with them, Pakatan Harapan will not be able to win in the coming general election,” he told Bernama Friday..

On Thursday, PAS declared it would be an opposition in Penang after the DAP-led state government sacked 300 Development and Security Committee (JKKK) members from among PAS members in the state.

PAS secretary-general Datuk Takiyuddin Hassan reportedly said following the state government’s action, PAS had no choice but to oppose its one-time political ally in the Pakatan Rakyat.

Meanwhile, Prof Madya Dr Mohd Azizuddin Mohd Sani said the action taken by Penang DAP was due to the fact that PAS no longer wanted to work with them in Pakatan Harapan.

He added that Penang PAS had taken the right step in becoming an opposition in the state after what DAP had done.

“However, it is rather odd for PAS not to be consistent in their decision and to defend their principle by declaring themselves as opposition in Selangor, too,” he noted.
