Najib, Mahathir and Pas had sought my advice on uniting Muslims, says Perak mufti
(NST) – Perak Mufti Tan Sri Harussani Zakaria said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohd and Pas members have come to him asking for advice on how to unite Muslim Malays in the country.
He said leaders from Umno and Pas both have shown strong determination towards upholding Islam in Malaysia.
“I was asked by Najib and Dr Mahathir on what are the ways to unite the Malay Muslims. I’m glad now they have realised that by splitting, they will only damage our people.
“Both Najib and Pas president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang had in the past expressed their intention to cooperate. Although they might not merge as one party, but at least we will now see them work hand-in-hand for one purpose, finding unity among the people.”
“If we do not come together as one, then we may only have two years before our downfall. Malay supremacy in the country must be defended as that is the strength of Islam in the country.
He said he could see some similarities in Umno and Pas but their methodologies were different. This, he said, was something that the two parties could further discuss about in the future.
Asked on the sort of cooperation the public can expect between Umno and Pas, Harussani said both parties could benefit from harmony in terms of policy implementation and support.
“Let say if there is a policy of importance, even with Umno and Pas operating as two separate parties, the support will be there. Support translates to strength,” said Harussani, adding that all parties must put aside their political or personal agenda and focus on upholding Islam in the country.
He was speaking to reporters at the Regional Multaqa (Seminar) 2015 organised by Al-Azhar Graduates (WAAG) Malaysia here today.
