Give MACC benefit of doubt, says Kadir Jasin
(The Malaysian Insider) – Datuk A. Kadir Jasin today said he feared the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) was attempting to proclaim its independence after the graft body told the media that investigations into Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s RM2.6 billion “donation” and the SRC International’s missing funds were without influence.
The veteran newsman says it might be a ruse to ensure that if MACC declares Najib is innocent of any wrongdoing, the people will accept it.
But Kadir, a vocal critic of Najib, said he wanted to give MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Abu Kassim Mohamed the “benefit of the doubt” because the man was known for his incorruptibility and had too much at stake to be lying.
“Let us pray that Abu Kassim was stating the truth because deep in my heart, I fear that it could be a ruse,” said Kadir in his blog.
“I fear that his proclamation of independence has a hidden reason – to establish credibility so that if ever the MACC were to find no case against Mohd Najib, the public would be forced to believe it.”
Abu Kassim told Malay-language daily Sinar Harian in an exclusive interview that the truth behind the RM2.6 billion “donation” and SRC International would come out.
While he admitted that the investigation involving Najib was the most challenging one he had faced in his entire career, he said MACC was independent and the officers carried out their duties professionally without fear or favour.
