Amanah, PAS slam DAP for insensitive remark over visa for Israeli sailors
(The Star) – In a rare occurrence, Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) lashed out at its political partner DAP for questioning the government’s decision to disallow Israeli sailors to take part in the Youth Sailing World Championships in Langkawi.
Amanah joined PAS in saying they supported Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin’s decision in accepting the withdrawal of the sailors on grounds that Malaysia was guided by diplomatic policy.
On Saturday, Perak DAP economic bureau chief Chong Zhemin questioned Khairy for acting based on political and personal sentiment in international sporting events. Chong argued that sports should transcend political boundaries and abstain from politics.
Perak Amanah Youth chief Mohd Fakhrulrazi Mohd Mokhtar said Chong’s remark was “insensitive”.
“Such a statement has hurt the feelings of the people, especially Muslims and peace lovers, who until now are concerned about the plight of the Palestinians,” said Mohd Fakhrulrazi.
He said Amanah had the right to advise DAP on such matters eventhough they are partners in politics.
“We hope the DAP will be more mindful in making statements in the future, especially when it comes to the sensitivities of the Muslims and the religion,” said Mohd Fakhrulrazi.
Perak PAS Youth chief Mohd Akmal Kamarudin said the government’s decision “is a step in the right direction as Malaysia does not have any diplomatic ties with Israel.”
Denying the sailors visas was nothing compared to the violence against the Palestinian people.
“Does this mean DAP, who claims to be championing justice and human rights, support Israel in attacking and oppressing Palestine?
“DAP should be more concerned about this. We also urge Chong to retract his statement and apologise for hurting the feelings of those who stand in solidarity with the Palestinians,” he said.
The Jerusalem Post reported that Yoav Omer and Noy Drihan would not be taking part in the event on Sunday as both have yet to receive their visas 24 hours before their scheduled departure.
The chairman of the Israel Sailing Association, Gili Amirl, said they may file a lawsuit against Malaysia and the International Sailing Federation (ISAF) for not allowing its athletes to participate.
