Ludicrous to take the word of a killer

If at all, this series of exposures is engineered to put all doubts on the PM to rest, it is an exercise in futility.

As if fashioned after a soap opera on daytime slot, a series of video confessions from the convicted killer of Mongolian national Altantuya Shaariibuu has emerged.

Showing the type of melodrama that makes afternoon soaps a global hit, Sirul Azhar Umar has been divulging juicy bits of information that are beginning to look like a movie trailer.

The former police commando appears to suggest the release of a blockbuster tell-all video about the 2006 murder that once implicated the man holding the highest political office in Malaysia.

It appears a pattern has emerged in his video releases. They seem to be aimed at absolving Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak of any role in the sinister manoeuvre to silence an operative, a blackmailer or just a plain blabbermouth for good, by ending her life.

As the prime minister was never officially accused of any involvement of the murder or charged, it boggles the mind why a killer is coming forth to clear his name. However, it must be said that political rivals had attempted to smear Najib’s name by implicating him in this sordid episode. This adds intrigue to the already convoluted scandal.

Since our existing legal framework ensures we live in a lawful society, we should put our faith in this system. We judge someone based on the courts’ decisions and not according to political moves to taint the leader of a nation.

Similarly, it is ludicrous to take the word of a killer. If at all, this series of exposures is engineered to put all doubts on the PM to rest, it is an exercise in futility. The sceptics will not budge from their beliefs, founded or otherwise. Likewise, loyalists would reject even the decisions by the highest court in the country.

At the risk of being drawn into an academic debate on the morality of a killer acting on command, it must be said that the words of a killer are unworthy. Many of us would cringe to hear a murderer swear in God’s name.
