Until today, human rights organisations and the opposition still insist that Anwar is innocent of the charge of sodomy. They still insist that Musa and Gani fixed Anwar up on false charges and fabricated evidence.

Shame on Putrajaya for keeping Anwar behind bars, say human rights bodies

(The Malaysian Insider) – An additional day Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim spends in jail is one more day of shame for the Malaysian government, a global human rights body says, in calling for the former opposition leader’s unconditional release.

International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH) and its Malaysian member organisation, Suara Rakyat Malaysia (Suaram), also urged the authorities to guarantee Anwar’s rights, including receiving adequate medical care according to international standards.

“It’s time the authorities put an end to the persecution of Anwar Ibrahim and immediately and unconditionally release him.

“Any additional day Anwar spends behind bars is one more day of shame for the Malaysian government and further tarnishes its battered reputation,” said FIDH president Karim Lahidji in the joint press release with Suaram.

Suaram executive director Sevan Doraisamy reminded that the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention (UNWGAD) in September last year deemed Anwar’s detention arbitrary and called for his immediate release and for his political rights to be reinstated.

On December 17, the European Parliament adopted a resolution urging the Malaysian government to release Anwar.

“The authorities must heed the UN and EU calls, immediately free Anwar, reinstate his right to run for political office, and award him compensation for the protracted injustice he endured,” Doraisamy said. (READ MORE HERE)

Anwar Ibrahim was implicated in his second sodomy scandal back in June 2008 when Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi (Pak Lah) was Prime Minister and Abdul Gani Patail was the Attorney General (AG). The Inspector General of Police (IGP) then was Musa Hassan.

Musa took over as the IGP in September 2006 and soon after that he was accused of having links with and of being the godfather behind the Chinese underworld syndicate involved in drugs, prostitution, gambling and loan sharking.

The Malaysian-Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) then launched an investigation into this matter but in July 2007 the Attorney General, Abdul Gani Patail, ordered the MACC to close down the investigation due to ‘lack of evidence’ — although there were a number of Statutory Declarations signed by police officers and underworld bosses saying otherwise.

Two months later, in September 2007, it was announced that Musa would be given a two-year extension till September 2009 even though he had already reached the mandatory retirement age. This shook up the entire police force that felt Musa should be asked to retire not only because he had reached the mandatory retirement age but also because he was embroiled in one of the worst scandals in the history of the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM).

In the end, Musa’s extension came to three years till September 2010. It was said he was asked to resign by the new Prime Minister, Najib Tun Razak, in September because of the many scandals surrounding him.

In June 2008, Anwar was yet again accused of sodomy and the allegation by the opposition was that this was a political conspiracy involving the IGP and the AG and that Anwar is a victim of false charges and fabricated evidence

Anwar was finally sentenced to five years jail in February 2015 in what is probably the longest delayed trial in Malaysian history and which saw the highest number of postponements ever.

Until today, human rights organisations and the opposition still insist that Anwar is innocent of the charge of sodomy. They still insist that Musa and Gani fixed Anwar up on false charges and fabricated evidence.

It is probably time that Musa Hassan and Gani Patail set the record straight and declare whether the allegations are true or not so that this matter can once and for all be laid to rest.

So, over to you Pak Lah, Musa and Gani! Did the three of you fix Anwar up and did you send an innocent man to jail? And is this the same Gani who Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad wants to be brought back as the AG?

And is this the same AG who the opposition said had fixed up Anwar and sent him to jail on false charges and fabricated evidence? And is this the same AG who the opposition now supports and regards as illegally removed and, therefore, should be reinstated?

So what was all that fuss outside the Sungai Buloh Prison yesterday? Was that just one big wayang?
