Musa Hassan: MACC officers must follow procedures

(The Star) – The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission must work according to procedures, otherwise there may be parties which could be unfairly victimised,Tan Sri Musa Hassan said.

The former Inspector-General of Police, who is now a member of MACC’s advisory board, was responding to a question posed to him by MACC’s radio channel, macc.fm, on the public’s negative perception that enforcement agencies are influenced by political issues.

“The perception held by the public now is because they are exposed to a lot of negative news and news which have been politicised.

“But it is up to us as enforcement agencies to show the public that we are transparent in carrying out our duties,” he said in the radio interview on Thursday.

“My advice is for MACC to follow procedures. Keep to it and don’t stray from procedures.

“For example, all investigations are confidential. Nobody must know.

“The public may want to know more, but you cannot tell them. The public can only be told (about the investigation) when the accused is charged in court.

“We don’t want anyone to be unfairly victimised,” he said adding that the public should understand that MACC must abide by the rules.

“We must work according to the law and work with transparency,” he said.

Musa also advised the media to be ethical in their reporting.

He said the media had sensationalised and politicised certain issues instead of reporting the truth, especially those involving VIPs.
