Where’s Muhyiddin’s reformasi movement?
Anwar acted immediately when sacked, but Muhyiddin and Mahathir only making statements, says DAP’s Loke.
(FMT) – A senior DAP official has challenged Muhyiddin Yassin and Dr Mahathir Mohamad to go into action and stop merely issuing statements calling for reforms of the political system.
DAP organising secretary Anthony Loke said the party welcome Muhyiddin’s call this week for everyone to work together towards making changes but it was up to the former deputy prime minister to make a move, and not for opposition politicians to do so.
Muhyiddin called for major changes in Malaysia’s institutions after the Umno Supreme Council suspended him as Umno deputy president for failing to carry out his duties. He remains an Umno member.
The party’s action came half a year after he was removed from the government as deputy prime minister and education minister for criticising the prime minister, Najib Razak, over the government’s investment arm 1MDB.
Loke pointed out that when Mahathir Mohamad sacked Anwar Ibrahim as deputy prime minister in 1998, Anwar had immediately launched the Reformasi movement.
“But Muhyiddin has been talking about change for months, but there’s no action,” Loke said in an interview with Malaysiakini.
Loke, who is MP for Seremban, said opposition politicians had welcomed the calls for changes made by Muhyiddin and Dr Mahathir, he had not stated what changes should be made. “There’s no serious effort to sit down and iron it out,” he was quoted as saying.
He cast doubt on the ability of a planned anti-Najib rally on March 27 to make meaningful decisions.
