Ambiga wants Anwar’s release as part of reforms

(FMT) – Ambiga Sreenevasan has demanded for former Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim’s release from prison as part of the reform agenda that was announced by former Premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad today.

The lawyer-turned-activist said the declaration should not be just about removing Prime Minister Najib Razak, but must take into account other matters too.

“It is not just about removing one man but also reforms. It is about democracy, strengthening the institutions, having free and fair elections and re-establishing the rule of law.

“We are here because we believe that the people and Malaysia deserve better than this.

“Thus, releasing Anwar must be in our reform agenda,” she said during a press conference attended by a host of influential leaders at Rumah Kelab Alumni Universiti Malaya in Kuala Lumpur here today.

On removing Najib, Ambiga said “it was nothing personal, this is how democracy works”.

However when Mahathir was asked if releasing Anwar was part of the agenda, the longest serving PM reiterated that the main agenda was to remove Najib.

Bersih 2.0 Chairman Maria Chin Abdullah also shared the same sentiment as Ambiga, saying it was vital for Najib to step down.

“It’s non-negotiable. We demand this and we are here for long-term change.”

Mahathir today announced the declaration to remove Najib Razak as PM and also called for much-needed reforms after his removal.
