Don’t drag the palace into your anti-Najib campaign, PAS tells Dr M

Hadi Awang

(MMO) – PAS insisted again today that only democratic means should be used to change those in government and said this should not include pressuring the Yang di-Pertuan Agong into getting involved in politics.

PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang said the Islamist party does not support the Citizens’ Declaration by Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, which he noted hopes to pressure the Royal Palace into listening to calls for Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s resignation.

“We don’t want to pull in parties that do not need to be included in any of the changes.

“We already have political parties and NGOs as well as others. We can work on that,” he told reporters when met outside the Dewan Rakyat today.

The Marang MP added that any change in the government should be done through democratic means and not through demonstrations or a nationwide petition like that being done by the Save Malaysia movement.

“The process of democracy is either a vote of no confidence or elections. That’s democracy and both of it is not being done,” Hadi said.

He, however, said that parties have the right to organise demonstrations but stressed that these must be only be held in accordance with the law.

“You can carry out demonstration but just follow the right process with the proper clarification,” Hadi said.

The media also plays a key role in influencing the people and should not be quick to play “judge” with politicians by deeming them guilty without concrete evidence, Hadi said.

“It’s not only about 1MDB (1Malaysia Development Berhad). We reject all kinds of corruption but it all needs to be investigated first. We do not want punish or implicate anyone until they are investigated the right way.

“What happens these days is it appears like [the] media becomes the judge. Media can report that way, but don’t make a decision before it’s been proven from investigations,” he explained.

Dr Mahathir said last month that the Save Malaysia movement aims to get a million signatures by the end of the year to pressure the rulers to take a stand on the political situation in the country.

“We must show the rulers that we want Najib to be out. This declaration should be signed by all including NGO, parties and the worker unions.

“People said I should bring a lorry. I only know how to bring a motorcar, but if need be, I will drive a lorry to the Palace. We want to show the rulers how the people are unhappy with Najib,” Dr Mahathir said during the Kongres Rakyat 2016 forum.
