RPK calls for proof of 1.25m signatures

He says insiders allege that the names of the signatories were taken from the electoral roll.

(FMT) – Blogger Raja Petra Kamarudin has challenged former prime minister Mahathir Mohamad to show proof that more than 1.25 million people have signed the Citizens’ Declaration calling for Prime Minister Najib Razak’s ouster.

In an article posted on his blog yesterday, Raja Petra said “insiders” had alleged that the signatures had been picked up from the electoral roll, which can be bought from the Election Commission.

Pointing to Mahathir’s statement that 250,000 signatures were rejected because the signatories’ identity cards (ICs) could not be verified, he said this meant that he had copies of 1.25 million ICs to show if the authorities were to ask for proof.

“So we need to see those 1.25 million ICs,” said the Manchester-based blogger.

“As Mahathir is so fond of saying to Prime Minister Najib Razak: an allegation has been made; so you must now show proof that the allegation is not true.

“Well, an allegation has been made that there are no 1.25 million signatures and that all these so-called signatories to that Save Malaysia petition are fakes and that Mahathir is lying to us.”

Even if Mahathir wasn’t lying, he added, the signatures did not reflect the sentiments of the majority of the 30 million Malaysians or the 15 million or more voters.

“I mean it is like saying that PAS managed to obtain one million signatures of Malaysians who support hudud and an Islamic state. And since one million Malaysians have signed a petition supporting hudud and an Islamic state, then it is the duty of the King to order Parliament to amend the Federal Constitution of Malaysia and to implement hudud as the new criminal code for Malaysia.”

He said those who are opposed to hudud would reject such a move as illegal.

Mahathir spoke of the 1.27 million signatures last Friday. He said he would be seeking an audience with the Yang Dipertuan Agong to submit the signatures to him.
