Supporting PAS is a step against BN, Ambiga tells Zaid
Former Bersih chairperson says it is a tactic to defeat BN, not help PAS win
(FMT) – Former Bersih chairperson Ambiga Sreenevasan has rejected the assumption by former minister Zaid Ibrahim that the Opposition has lost its way in its support of PAS for the Sungai Besar and Kuala Kangsar by-elections against BN.
Ambiga said their support was only to ensure straight fights against BN.
“For me, it isn’t important which party is contesting, even though PAS traditionally stands for the two seats,” Ambiga said when met at an event last night.
“Whoever is contesting, whether it be PAS, PKR, or any other party, it should be one to one. That’s all we are saying.”
Zaid had in a blog post yesterday criticised the support from Opposition figures, such as former Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, PKR Deputy President Azmin Ali and Ambiga, for PAS standing in the two constituencies, calling it stupid and in vain.
Zaid said they were so overcome by their hate for BN that they would support PAS, a party he said “was no better than BN”.
To that, Ambiga said: “It is a tactical move to make Barisan lose. It is not to make PAS win. Understand that. There is a difference.”
