(MMO) – Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad today continued to keep silent on his choices for the next prime minister, which critics said revealed his ambition to see his son fill the post.

Responding to a question from the public, the former prime minister said the decision was not his to make.

“I can’t say which one, but people have to be smart. Elect leaders not because of party or brotherhood, but someone who is good and capable, based on their performance and background.

“Choosing a leader is not very easy, but like it or not, we have to choose leaders wisely and if we find that they have failed, we have to get rid of them,” he told guests at a forum titled ‘The Missing Force” organised by the National Union of Flight Attendants Malaysia (Nufam) here.

Critics including the prime minister’s press secretary, Datuk Seri Tengku Sariffuddin Tengku Ahmad, allege Dr Mahathir is using the “Save Malaysia” movement to depose Datuk Seri Najib Razak and pave the way for Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir’s ascension.

Mukhriz denied the claim, and is suing Tengku Sarifuddin for defamation.
