Azmin downplays Anwar’s second letter
(The Star) – PKR has moved to downplay a second letter from prison by Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, which again warns party leaders of working too closely with his nemesis, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
Party deputy president Datuk Seri Azmin Ali said the letter should not become an issue as it was a private communication between one leader and another.
“I’m not privy to the letter, but apparently, it is a personal letter from Anwar to (PKR vice-president) Shamsul Iskandar.
“It is a private communication from one leader to another, so it should not be in the public domain,” he told reporters after accompanying PKR president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail on a walkabout at a Ramadan bazaar here on Thursday.
Joining them were Amanah candidate Dr Ahmad Termizi Ramli and other Pakatan Harapan leaders.
Azmin, who is Selangor Mentri Besar, said the party regularly communicated with Anwar and received advice from him, so his latest message was “not an issue at all”.
Anwar’s latest missive, written from prison, was said to be personally addressed to Shamsul, who is PKR vice-president and Bukit Katil MP.
He was reportedly singled out because he had represented PKR at several closed-door meetings with the former premier on the Citizens’ Declaration.
Last month, Anwar sent a first letter from prison, expressing his misgivings about party leaders collaborating with Dr Mahathir.
