Umno rebels talk of new 3M party against Najib
Branch leaders’ movement names Mahathir, Muhyiddin and Mukhriz and pledges to take action
(FMT) – An anti-Najib movement of Umno branch leaders has spoken about a new 3M party (Mahathir, Muhyiddin and Mukhriz) to work against Umno leader Najib Razak.
“GKCM will commence action. Umno is plagued by a serious loss of confidence. Is it goodbye to Umno?” said the movement’s leader, Kamarul Azman, in a statement quoted by Malaysiakini.
Gerakan Ketua Cawangan Malaysia, a coalition of rebel Umno branch leaders, came about in mid-2015 at the height of former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s campaign to oust Najib.
Yesterday, Umno expelled deputy president Muhyiddin Yassin and supreme council member Mukhriz Mahathir, son of the former premier, for their criticism against Najib and being part of the Mahathir-led Citizens’ Declaration.
Dr Mahathir left Umno earlier this year. Muhyiddin was dismissed from the Cabinet, where he was deputy prime minister, and later suspended from Umno. Mukhriz resigned as Kedah menteri besar in February after an internal Umno rebellion.
Another critic, Umno vice-president Shafie Apdal, was also suspended.
GKCM’s Kamarul said Malaysians would rise up to oppose widespread abuse of power in the country, and reminded Najib and the supreme council of the People’s Power revolution of 1986 which drove out Ferdinand Marcos in the Philippines.
