(Channel News Asia) – The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) arrested Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng on Wednesday (Jun 29), for alleged corrupt practices.

In a tweet, his father and Democratic Action Party (DAP) advisor Lim Kit Siang announced: “Guan Eng arrested by MACC on two charges of corruption and will be produced in court tomorrow morning.”

The younger Lim is the secretary-general of the DAP. According to The Star Online, officers arrived at his office while he was chairing a meeting of the state executive councillors. It reported that Lim has been under investigation for alleged corruption involving the purchase of a bungalow on Jul 28 last year.

A post on his Facebook account said Chief Minister Lim was taken away by MACC officers at 6.30pm and told exco members “See you tomorrow”. His former political secretary, MP for Tanjong Ng Wei Aik said he will likely spend the night in the lock-up at MACC headquarters.

He faces two counts under Section 23 of the MACC Act and Section 165 of the Penal Code. Video of Lim’s arrest was uploaded on his Facebook page as well.

Tweeting from Lim Guan Eng’s account, the DAP called for supporters to go to the MACC headquarters on Wednesday evening in a show of solidarity.
