(The Star) – PAN has endorsed former Umno deputy president and deputy prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin to become the new Opposition leader for Pakatan Harapan.

The party’s central committee member, Mazlan Aliman, said there were discussions within the party to propose the appointment to the rest of Pakatan Harapan.

“It was agreed that we pick Muhyiddin as the new Opposition leader as Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is serving time in prison.

“He has the experience and will strengthen us.

“However, Anwar is still our number one choice to become the prime minister,” he told a press conference at the Southern Chinese Press Club here yesterday.

PAN Johor chief Aminolhuda Hassan said Muhyiddin was a formidable foe when he was with Umno and believed that the Opposition should rope him in to take on Barisan Nasional.

He said when Anwar was sacked some 18 years ago, former PAS president, the late Datuk Fadzil Mohd Noor, opened the door for him to join the Opposition.

“When he was the mentri besar here, Muhyiddin made Johor the Barisan fortress where the Opposition barely made a scratch in many attempts,” he said.
