(The Star) – Controversial DAP leader “Superman” Hew Kuan Yau has quit the party in order to prevent attacks against the DAP because of him.

In a Facebook posting on Thursday, Hew announced his decision to quit the party in light of the “big picture”.

He said that DAP’s political opponents have been using him as an excuse to attack the party, claiming that his words were “twisted” by cybertroopers.

Hew, who is Teluk Intan DAP chief, said he has no interest in party politics and even declined to be a candidate in the last general election and the Teluk Intan by-election.

While he is aware that many in the party disagreed with his style of speaking and political views, he nevertheless stood by his speeches.

Hew also said that he decided to quit DAP on his own free-will and wished the party all the best, adding that he will now focus on managing the Penang Comic Art and Manga Museum.

Known as “Superman” for his fondness for wearing T-shirts with the superhero’s crest at DAP events, Hew stirred controversy for allegedly playing up racial issues at a ceramah in Batu Kitang during the Sarawak state election.

His comments had stirred anger among various politicians who criticised DAP for not censuring one of its leaders.

In response, Hew had vowed to keep his comments clean in the future.
