Nazir: US AG says same thing ‘The Edge’ was suspended for

Democracy is not just about elections, it’s also about the integrity of institutions, the rule of law and freedom of the media, says PM’s brother Nazir Razak.

(FMT) – Nazir Razak today reminded the nation that a year ago The Edge was suspended for saying almost the same thing the US Department of Justice (DoJ) said on Wednesday.

In his latest Instagram post, Nazir, who is the younger brother of Prime Minister Najib Razak, posted a picture of the business paper’s front page article that got its publishing permit suspended for three months.

In his caption, Nazir wrote about how the article headlined “How Jho Low and PetroSaudi cheated Malaysia out of RM1.83b cash (and RM400m million paper profit) with help from 1MDB executives” was now repeated by the US attorney-general in the DoJ lawsuits which were made public on Wednesday.

“Exactly 12 months ago, this headline got them suspended.

“Today, the US attorney-general is saying pretty much the same thing,” wrote the CIMB group chairman last night.

The DoJ lawsuits filed in Los Angeles alleged that over USD3.5 billion was misappropriated from state investment firm 1MDB.

The DoJ seeks to seize assets allegedly bought using money stolen from 1MDB, including penthouses, mansions, artwork, a private jet and proceeds from the “Wolf of Wall Street” movie.

Although he did not mention Najib’s name, Nazir’s comment reflected the criticism levelled by his brother’s critics against the Barisan Nasional Government.

“Democracy is not just about elections, it’s also about the integrity of institutions, the rule of law and freedom of the media,” he wrote.

The post, as of this morning, had garnered close to 1,500 likes, with most of those who commented on it pleading for Nazir’s assistance in ensuring justice was served.

Nazir has been actively speaking out on the controversies surrounding the state investment firm and in May, he slammed 1MDB’s top executives for failing to turn up for the Public Accounts Committee hearing.

He also previously questioned the state investment arm’s tardiness in beginning its March 2015 audit.

More recently, Nazir has been linked with the setting up of a new non-governmental organisation with like-minded individuals, such as former Global Movement of Moderates chief executive officer Saifuddin Abdullah, over concerns regarding Malaysia’s present socio-political landscape.
