Mahathir desperately wants the US to help his son become PM
Mahathir believes that the US has the power to decide who becomes the Prime Minister of Malaysia. He believed this in 1997 and still believes it today. So now that the future looks bleak for Mukhriz, Mahathir is turning to the US for help and is horse-trading the 1MDB issue to gain American support for his son.
THE CORRIDORS OF POWER
Raja Petra Kamarudin
Anwar Ibrahim was released from jail on the 2nd of September 2004 because, according to the Federal Court, although they are convinced that he is guilty of sodomy, the prosecutor failed to prove it. In other words, Abdul Gani Patail did a sloppy job. In fact, Anwar accused Gani of fabricating the evidence in order to win a conviction and maybe this is the Federal Court’s way of agreeing with the allegation that Gani did indeed fabricate evidence.
With this track record as the backdrop (fabrication of evidence against a Deputy Prime Minister or deposed Deputy Prime Minister) is there any wonder that Gani would not also fabricate evidence against Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak in their attempt to oust him and replace him with a Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad proxy Prime Minister and Mukhriz as the new Deputy Prime Minister?
I mean there is hardly a single Pakatun who will not swear on his or her mother’s grave that Anwar was fixed up on fabricated charges by both the then IGP and the then Attorney General. And Gani, who was leading the prosecution team at that time, had to make sure that Anwar gets convicted and goes to jail for something he did not do. Well, at least this is what the Pakatuns believe. And now the Pakatuns want Mahathir as their new leader. As Kua Kia Soong said today, “Have you lost your marbles?” (READ HERE).
Anyway, that is not what I want to talk about today. What I want to talk about is that Mahathir is getting real desperate and realises that his son’s chances of becoming the Deputy Prime Minister and eventually the Prime Minister is slipping farther and farther away and is disappearing over the horizon. He is so desperate that he is even prepared to lick back his spit and work with ‘The Great Satan from the West’, the You Ass of Aye a.k.a. USA.
Yes, when Mahathir places all his money on the US then you know he is feeling just like Hitler during the last few days when the Russians were knocking on Berlin’s East Gate and the Americans on the West Gate. It is a feeling that the future is hopeless unless you get down on your hands and knees and ask for help from people whom you once said you would rather die than kowtow to. And now Mahathir has to eat back every single last word of his.
On 10th September 2004, eight days after Anwar was released from jail, Malaysiakini published an item titled ‘US will get Anwar to be PM at any cost’, which you can read below. On 13th September 2004, John Malott rebutted that with the piece titled ‘Anwar US agent claims utter nonsense’ which you can also read below.
Now, take note of one thing. According to the Pakatuns, Malaysiakini never lies and what they publish is the Gospel and 100% true. So you have no reason to doubt what Malaysiakini wrote on 10th September 2004.
Anyway, the point is, at that time Mahathir believed that the US was behind Anwar and wanted to make Anwar the new Malaysian Prime Minister (and Al Gore ‘confirmed’ this during his dinner speech), which means the US has to first help oust Mahathir. And that was why Mahathir was fiercely anti-US.
Mahathir questioned whether Bin Ladin was really behind the bombing of the New York Twin Towers a.k.a. 911 or whether it was an inside job — meaning the CIA did it. He also suggests that Bin Ladin was a CIA agent and that is why he was never caught and then they faked his assassination and put him under the ‘witness protection program’.
Mahathir is also fiercely anti-Jew and he alleges that the US is fighting a proxy war on behalf of the Jews. He always believed this and still believes it until today, as the video below will prove.

So can you imagine how desperate a person has to be when he needs to turn to the people he despises so much and beg for their help? One would imagine that Mahathir would rather die than go begging to the Americans. But then he has no choice. This is not about him. After all he does not have long to live anyway. This is about his family and Mukhriz as the future Malaysian Prime minister.
And that was why he sent Khairuddin Abu Hassan, Matthias Chang, Abu Kassim Mohamed, Abdul Gani Patail and Dr Zeti Akhtar Aziz to the US to offer to work with the Americans and give them all and whatever ‘evidence’ they require to help nail Najib, even if they need to fabricate that evidence like how Gani was said to have done many times before.
Mahathir is hoping that he can impress the US that this is a new Mahathir, a changed Mahathir, a Mahathir who only wants to see the truth revealed and justice done. And this reincarnated Mahathir is going to help the US with whatever it takes to get rid of Najib.
And that is the main reason Mahathir is forming a new party and will join the new ‘grand’ coalition, to quote Selangor Menteri Besar Azmin Ali. He wants to show the world that he is part of Anwar’s DAP-led Pakatan, the darling of the United States.
As what Mahathir’s son, Mukhriz, said two days ago. Mahathir does not want to become the opposition. He wants to oust the evil Umno and Barisan Nasional that the US hates so much. That is what Mahathir will do for the US. And what the US must do for Mahathir is they must agree to his candidate for the new proxy Prime Minister and his son as the new Deputy Prime Minister.

US will get Anwar to be PM at any cost
(Malaysiakini, 10 September 2004) – Under President Bill Clinton’s administration, Anwar Ibrahim was ‘their man’ to become the prime minister of Malaysia. During Clinton’s terms of presidency, substantial ‘resources’ were given to ensure that Anwar would become the Malaysian PM.
Ronald Reagan, George Bush Senior, and Clinton despised Dr Mahathir Mohamad for all the obvious reasons. Also, substantial ‘resources’ were given to ensure that Mahathir’s administration failed in one way or the other. Some may know of the ‘hardships’ they posed for Mahathir.
Their objective was always Anwar Ibrahim.
Such a close alliance and friendship with the US administration, that Anwar was given the 21-gun salute by the US military – first of its kind to a deputy prime minister. Mahathir was never given the honour.
Deals were setup between US bankers and Anwar during the Asian financial crisis. Anwar, being pro-US, was inclined to take up the International Monetary Funds (IMF) offer to bail out Malaysia.
It is no secret in the US Congress that the Clinton administration was disgusted and unhappy when Anwar was put in jail. ‘Their man’ imprisoned brought certain amount of grief that Clinton send his deputy Albert Gore to ‘humiliate’ and teach Mahathir a lesson or two on democracy. Gore did just that.
To the US, Mahathir was a clear and present danger to their national security and interest.
Substantial amount of ‘resources’ were also allocated to jumpstart the reformasi movement. The US wanted the reformasi movement to masquerade as a local Malaysian movement by Malaysians to topple the Mahathir administration. The US has utilised this tactic successfully in the Philippines, Nicaragua, Panama, Chile and other South American countries.
Just before Anwar’s release last Thursday, a US aircraft carrier battle group docked at Westport, Port Klang. It included the USS John C Stennis aircraft carrier , three destroyers, three frigates and a nuclear submarine. They had a reason for being here.
Gunboat diplomacy still works. ‘Their man’ was released. Now, these ‘resources’ also finance Anwar’s medical treatment in Germany. And now these ‘resources’ will get to work.
For their objective. To get Anwar to be the Malaysian prime minister – by whatever means necessary.

Anwar US agent claims utter nonsense
John R Malott
(Malaysiakini, 13 September 2004) — Most of the letters to malaysiakini are submitted with pseudonyms, for reasons we all understand. It is a way for readers to express their political opinions without fear of retribution.
But a recent letter to malaysiakini, US will get Anwar to be PM at any cost, written by someone who hides behind the name ‘Kzacar’, crossed the line. Far from expressing his views on the events of the day, Kzacar has written (and malaysiakini unfortunately has published) a surat layang, filled with falsehoods and unsubstantiated claims from top to bottom.
Just as Kzacar doesn’t have the courage to reveal who he is, he doesn’t offer one shred of evidence to back up his many false statements concerning the relationship between Anwar Ibrahim and the United States. Taken together, the writer is claiming, falsely, that the United States government has been actively interfering in Malaysia’s internal politics for over a decade.
As US ambassador during the time under question, let me take up Kzacar’s points one by one and reveal them for what they are – false assertions, innuendos, and unsubstantiated claims.
Claim 1: ‘Under President Bill Clinton’s administration, Anwar Ibrahim was ‘their man’ to become the prime minister of Malaysia.’
Truth: In fact, Anwar was Mahathir’s man to become prime minister until their falling out. Mahathir said on more than one occasion, including after Anwar’s arrest, that Anwar would have been his successor. Most Malaysian political observers also expected Anwar to succeed Mahathir.
Claim 2: ‘During Clinton’s terms of presidency, substantial ‘resources’ were given to ensure that Anwar would become the Malaysian PM.’
Truth: The US government never provided one ringgit of support to Anwar. Kzacar’s accusation is libellous, and readers should note that he provides no evidence, because there is none.
Claim 3: ‘Substantial ‘resources’ were given to ensure that Mahathir’s administration failed in one way or the other. Some may know of the ‘hardships’ they posed for Mahathir.’
Truth: As with the previous assertion, there is no merit whatsoever to this strange claim. No US government resources were ever expended to ‘ensure Mahathir’s failure.’
Claim 4: ‘Anwar was given the 21-gun salute by the US military – first of its kind to a deputy prime minister. Mahathir was never given the honour.’
Truth: Actually, it was a 19-gun salute, and I dealt with this claim four years ago in an article in malaysiakini. Defence ministries around the world provide military honours to official visitors, and the salute to Anwar, who was then Malaysia’s deputy prime minister, was in accord with military protocol and was provided to other foreign leaders as well. If prime minister Mahathir had visited the Pentagon, he would have received the same honour.
Claim 5: ‘Deals were setup between US bankers and Anwar during the Asian financial crisis.’
Truth: Since I was in Malaysia at the time and following the financial crisis very closely, this is all news to me. What deals were struck? Where are the press reports or Malaysian financial records? What evidence does Kzacar offer for this bold assertion? None, because there isn’t any.
Claim 6: ‘The Clinton administration was disgusted and unhappy when Anwar was put in jail.’
Truth: It wasn’t just the US that expressed concern about Anwar’s arrest and near death in prison. Similar expressions of concern came from the presidents of Indonesia and the Philippines; the UN secretary-general; the secretary-general of Unesco; Nelson Mandela; the British, Canadian, Australian, and New Zealand governments; the foreign minister of Thailand; the European Union; Amnesty International; Human Rights Watch; and the Asian and Commonwealth Bar Councils. Concern came from a number of Arab countries as well, but in private.
Claim 7: ‘To the US, Mahathir was a clear and present danger to their national security and interest.’
Truth: While Mahathir’s anti-American rhetoric was excessive, neither he nor Malaysia ever represented a threat to US national security. Comparing America’s and Malaysia’s relative military strengths, how can anyone make such a ridiculous assertion? In any event, the US and Malaysia have excellent military cooperation, as described by Najib Abdul Razak in a May 2002 speech at the Heritage Foundation.
Claim 8: ‘Substantial amount of ‘resources’ were also allocated to jumpstart the reformasi movement. The US wanted the reformasi movement to masquerade as a local Malaysian movement by Malaysians to topple the Mahathir administration.’
Truth: No US government resources were provided to the reformasi movement, and Kzacar again makes a false assertion without details or evidence. And no responsible Malaysian political observer has ever suggested that the reformasi movement was anything other than a local Malaysian movement.
Claim 9: ‘Just before Anwar’s release last Thursday, a US aircraft carrier battle group docked at Westport, Port Klang. It included the USS John C Stennis aircraft carrier, three destroyers, three frigates and a nuclear submarine. They had a reason for being here. Gunboat diplomacy still works. ‘Their man’ was released.’
Truth: Visits by US naval vessels are approved by the Malaysian government well in advance of the ship’s actual arrival. The approval for this particular visit would have been given by Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi’s government. Gunboat diplomacy is when you go where you are not welcomed, but the Malaysian government consistently has welcomed US naval visits. In fact, the first ever visits to Malaysia by a US aircraft carrier and by a US nuclear submarine were approved by prime minister Mahathir’s government.
Claim 10: ‘Now, these ‘resources’ also finance Anwar’s medical treatment in Germany.’
Truth: Although I am no longer with the US government, I am not aware of any US government funding for Anwar’s treatment in Germany. This is one more example of an assertion without evidence.
From top to bottom, Kzacar’s letter is junk and in the same category as the discredited ’50 Reasons Why Anwar Cannot be PM’ pamphlet. One can only hope that in this new era of Malaysian politics, no one will pay heed to peddlers of slime.
The writer was US ambassador to Malaysia 1995-1998.
