Syed Saddiq, who is one of the seven founding committee members of the party, tells FMT to expect “some surprises.”

(FMT) – The new political party formed by the nation’s longest serving former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad will be called Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia and will be formally registered today.

This information was relayed to FMT by a source who has been involved in the party’s formation since day one.

According to the source, the new Bumiputera-only party’s President Muhyiddin Yassin will head to the Putrajaya headquarters of the Registrar of Societies’ (RoS) at 3.30pm today, to submit all necessary documents to officially register the party.

One of its seven founding committee members, Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman confirmed this, and said he too would be present to accompany Muhyiddin, the former Umno deputy president, who was sacked from the party recently.

However not everyone is happy over the formation of the party with MCA Religious Harmony Bureau secretary Chris Daniel Wong yesterday criticising it for bringing racism back onto the political scene by catering only to Bumiputeras.

His criticism rang loudly despite an explanation offered by veteran newsman A Kadir Jasin that one of the reasons behind its Bumiputera only stance was to avoid competition with its multiracial allies, DAP and PKR.

Syed speaking to FMT last night, slammed MCA for issuing such a statement, and called the party “hypocritical” for “obvious reasons.”

“This party, despite being a Bumiputera party, will champion all Malaysians when it comes to motions for reforms. This party is a reform-centric Bumiputera party.”

He also said Malaysians could expect some “surprises”, and while he could not disclose much, he did reveal the new party would not be fully race-based.

The formation of the new party was announced by Mahathir last month, who said the party would work alongside the federal Opposition coalition of Pakatan Harapan, in an effort to topple Prime Minister Najib Razak and his Barisan Nasional government in the next general election.
