British economists ‘thumbs up’ BR1M method
(Malaysia Outlook) – Thirty-five economists in the United Kingdom have agreed that the 1Malaysia People’s Aid (BR1M) is the best method to boost local economic development, according to Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak.
He said with the aid, the people would spend the money to purchase their daily necessities and inadvertently, helped boost the country’s economy.
“What is so wrong in helping the poor? I give BR1M, they (those opposing the BR1M) say I give ‘dedak’ (animal feed). I didn’t say it, but 35 economists in the UK say that BR1M is the best method.
“They (economists) say BR1M is the best because when people receive the money, they will go to the shops and buy goods, go to the markets and buy fish, vegetables, shoes and clothes. Local economy is growing because there is this economic injection,” he said when opening the Tangga Batu UMNO divisional delegates’ meeting here today.
He said all efforts done by the government had helped the people in all aspects of life, including creating job opportunities in each development project.
For example, the prime minister said the transportation projects, such as the light rail transit (LRT) and the mass rapid transit (MRT), had also created job opportunities for engineering graduates.
In fact, Najib said such projects had not only helped reduce public transportation problems in the country, but also beneficial to the people and the nation.
