Umno leaders nothing compared to Onn Jaafar, says Art Harun
(FMT) – Lawyer-activist slams Hishammuddin Hussein for tearing apart grandfather’s legacy of leading with humility, integrity, and speaking against injustice and inequality.
Umno leaders today are incomparable to its first president Onn Jaafar, a prominent lawyer-activist said of Umno vice-president Hishammuddin Hussein’s grandfather.
Azhar Harun, who is better known as Art Harun, challenged Hishammuddin to name any Umno leader who could emulate their founding president when it came to living a simple life.
“When he was appointed Home Affairs Minister, right smack in the middle of the Emergency, Onn had moved to Kuala Lumpur and lived in a single-storey house at what is now Persiaran Stonor.
“Despite that being the era of the Emergency, as Home Affairs Minister, he actually REFUSED police guard,” Art wrote on his Facebook page yesterday in response to comments by Hishammuddin on the qualities of his grandfather when opening the Kota Baru Umno delegates meeting on Sunday.
“Despite years being a top politician and holding a ministerial position, Onn died with only RM300 in his bank account and another princely sum of RM30 with him. He had one car, an Austin 70 with license plate number JB 4188,” Art said, attributing the information to Onn’s daughter Azah (Hishammuddin’s aunt).
“Would ANY of you Umno leaders live in a one-storey house without the perks of bodyguards and a battery of minions? Would you live with one car and have just RM30,000 (after taking into consideration the inflationary factor) in your bank account like your grandfather?” Art asked Hishammuddin, adding that Onn’s legacy cannot and should not be torn apart and looked at piecemeal.
