Mahathir-Anwar meeting will not strengthen opposition: Nur Jazlan

(Bernama) – The meeting between Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim at the Kuala Lumpur High Court yesterday will not be able to strengthen the opposition pact in the 14th general election (GE14), said UMNO Supreme Council member Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed.

Nur Jazlan, who is also Deputy Home Minister, said Dr Mahathir realised that he was not accepted as before, until he was forced to seek Anwar to strengthen the opposition.

“(Dr) Mahathir met Anwar to court PKR supporters. However, many of them left UMNO because of what he (Dr Mahathir) did to Anwar. They don’t like what Tun Mahathir did when he was the prime minister.

“When he (Dr Mahathir) met Anwar to show his support, this will turn off PKR supporters. He is helping UMNO and BN in general election. The meeting might be a source of unhappiness among PKR members and cause them to leave PKR,” he told the media after officiating the Home Ministry’s Security Psychology Seminar here today.

Nur Jazlan was asked on the meeting between Mahathir and Anwar in the Kuala Lumpur High Court where Anwar had a case relating to the National Security Council.

Mahathir sacked Anwar in 1998 as the deputy prime minister. Anwar was also sacked from UMNO.
