Emulate Mahathir-Anwar, PKR Youth tells opposition leaders

PKR Deputy Youth Chief Dr Afif Bahardin wants opposition parties to put aside differences in order to ‘Save Malaysia’.

(FMT) – A PKR Youth leader has described the handshake between former adversaries Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Anwar Ibrahim as “muafakat agung” (monumental treaty) and a new chapter in Malaysian politics.

PKR Deputy Youth Chief Dr Afif Bahardin said it was a proud moment for many as Anwar and Mahathir were big hearted enough to put aside decades of differences and fight to “Save Malaysia”.

“We are optimistic that the historic meet is a sign of new reforms that are inclusive.

“We welcome this meeting as it opens a new chapter for stronger cooperation in the opposition coalition in this country,” he said at a press conference in Komtar today.

Afif spoke on the sidelines of the Seberang Prai Fiesta 2016 announcement. The fiesta will take place at the Seberang Jaya Expo site from September 14 to 18 from 10am to 11pm.

Meanwhile, Afif reminded PKR members to emulate Anwar’s big-heartedness and put aside differences held in the past.

“We would like to ask all PAS, DAP, Amanah and other opposition parties to come as one in the same spirit as Mahathir and Anwar, to be committed to a Reformasi agenda together,” he added.

On Monday, Mahathir made an unscheduled visit to the Kuala Lumpur High Court where Anwar filed an urgent application to suspend the coming into force of the controversial National Security Council Act.

The 91-year-old Mahathir arrived about 3pm and shook hands before briefly exchanging pleasantries with Anwar in the witness room.

It is believed this was the first time Mahathir and Anwar, 68, were meeting again after a lapse of 18 years.
