Jeff Ooi probed over ‘Haron Din’ tweet
(Malaysia Outlook) – DAP parliamentarian Jeff Ooi Chuan Aun is being investigated by the police over his alleged insensitive tweet on the demise of PAS spiritual leader Haron Din.
He is being probed under Section 298 of the Penal Code for causing disharmony, disunity and prejudicing the maintenance of harmony or unity, on the grounds of religion.
Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Khalid Ibrahim told this to reporters after the monthly assembly in Bukit Aman today.
“We are investigating him.” said Khalid, adding that the Jelutong MP would be called in to get his statement recorded.
But the IGP said it is better for Jeff Ooi to surrender to facilitate police investigation and save time.
“Or else we have to find him.” he said.
Yesterday Jeff Ooi has brushed suggestions that he should publicly apologise to Haron Din’s family and Muslims over his so-called insensitive tweet on the death of the PAS spiritual leader.
Indeed, the DAP lawmaker questioned his critics on why he should issue such an apology in the first place when his tweet did not contain any unlawful word or remark.
“What apology I have to ask? Show me on how my tweet breached any law,” he told newsmen.
Jeff Ooi said he would abide by any decision to be taken by his party, DAP, on the issue.
