Anwar still our pick for PM, Opposition tells Dr M

(The Star) – Jailed PKR leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim remains Pakatan Harapan’s choice for prime minister if the Opposition comes to power after the next general election.

DAP acting national chairman Tan Kok Wai (pic) said that there should not be any further talk on who is to become prime minister as it was previously decided that Anwar would assume the post if the Opposition won.

“The decision remains that Anwar will become prime minister unless Pakatan Harapan decides otherwise in the future.

“As it stands, the consensus remains the same,” he told The Star on Tuesday.

Tan was responding to Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s speech to students in London last week that Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin would be prime minister if the Opposition wins the 14th next general election.

He acknowledged that such a decision was conditional on Muhyiddin being chosen by his own party, Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia, for the post with Pakatan also endorsing the appointment.

However, Dr Mahathir said that there would not be a decision on the matter now as “some people will be disappointed and that will split the party”.

PKR vice-president Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin said that although Dr Mahathir had a right to air his personal views on the matter, he should not “fluster” anyone.

“Dr Mahathir knows the people’s choice is always Anwar as in the past election, 52% of the popular voters chose him to lead the pact,” he said.
