BN already reached consensus on Hadi’s Bill, says Ku Nan
(MMO) – Ahead of the next Dewan Rakyat sitting, Barisan Nasional (BN) secretary-general Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Mansor revealed today that the coalition has made up its mind on PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang’s Private Members Bill.
The Federal Territories minister however refused to divulge the consensus reached between all 13 component parties, whether to wholly support or oppose the proposed bill to strengthen the Shariah courts.
“As far as we are concerned, whatever decision we made is in consensus, so it was discussed and we have got a decision so you wait and see,” Tengku Adnan curtly told reporters when met after an event today.
Hadi’s Private Members Bill seeking to amend the Shariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act 1965 is set to debated in the upcoming Parliament session this month.
The Islamist party president first tabled the private member’s Bill in May during the last Parliament sitting seeking to amend the Shariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act, also known as Act 355.
The Bill aims to empower Shariah courts to enforce punishments ― except for the death penalty ― provided in Shariah laws for Islamic offences listed under state jurisdiction in the Federal Constitution.
Shariah court punishments are currently limited to jail terms not exceeding three years, whipping of not more than six strokes, or fines of not more than RM5,000.
