Bersih claims two cars damaged in Sabah; ‘Red Shirts’ force convoy to stop in Perak
(MMO) – Clashes between “Red Shirts” and Bersih 2.0 in the latter’s nationwide convoy continued today, with the electoral group saying two cars in its Sabah convoy were vandalised today.
According to Sabah Bersih 2.0 chief Beverly Joeman, three youths on motorcycles followed and allegedly harassed the 10-car convoy in Tawau.
“Two cars that were part of the ten-car convoy had the windows smashed, and another had its tyre punctured. These cowardice (sic) acts were carried out while the convoy members were walking about the Pasar Besar Tawau just before noon,” she said in a statement today.
Police reportedly detained one of the three youths. The group also lodged a police report later.
In Perak, the two groups also clashed on the way to Hutan Melintang, Perak with the “Red Shirts” seen confronting Bersih 2.0 members in videos uploaded to social media.
The “Red Shirts” reportedly intercepted the convoy in the middle of its journey and forced it to stop, before allegedly accosting them on foot.
One such video depicted an unidentified “Red Shirt” accusing former Bersih 2.0 chairman Datuk Ambiga Sreenevasan of “inciting” the public.
Police were on hand to keep the situation under control, which Ambiga acknowledged in a tweet.
Umno Sungai Besar chief Datuk Jamal Yunos’s “Red Shirts” are trailing Bersih 2.0 that is on a nationwide tour ahead of the Bersih 5 rally on November 19, and robustly confronting the electoral group during its stops.
