MCA questions Bersih support among Malay majority
(The Star) – Bersih will not achieve its objectives if it only stands for the rights of the minority, says MCA religious harmony bureau secretary Chris Daniel Wong.
He said that recent comments made by Seputeh MP Teresa Kok had implied that the Bersih rally was being held only to uphold the rights of the minority, and not the country’s Malay majority.
“If the Malay majority has lost faith in Bersih as what Teresa implied, then it is fruitless for even the minority to assemble because without the majority, what Bersih hopes for will never be achieved,” Wong said in a statement on Sunday.
Teresa, who is DAP national vice-chairman, was quoted in an online portal as saying that the ‘red shirts’ led by Sungai Besar Umno chief Datuk Seri Jamal Yunos were threatening the democratic rights of the minority to peacefully assemble.
Wong retorted by questioning where Bersih’s Malay support had gone, adding that the movement which is advocating for free and fair elections was merely being used as a tool of the Opposition.
“If the demonstration is only for the minority, then Bersih and the entire Opposition pact has lost its moral battle as Bersih is now seen being used by the opposition in spreading hatred by exploiting the minority,” Wong added.
