Najib says initiated 1MDB probe, while others publicise it for personal gain
(MMO) – Amid international inquiries into the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) controversy, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak asserted that he was the first to order multiple investigations into the sovereign investment fund.
In an interview published in the Nikkei Asian Review today, Najib highlighted that Malaysian authorities had paved the way for investigations into 1MDB under his direction.
“It was I who first instructed multiple authorities in Malaysia to conduct investigations,” Najib told the English-language Japanese business journal when asked to comment if Malaysia would reopen investigations into 1MDB following probes in foreign jurisdictions.
He also said that the authorities would act without favour if 1MDB was found to have violated any laws.
“I have always made clear that full cooperation should be extended to any investigation provided it is in accordance with the laws of our country.
“Furthermore, as I have consistently stated, if any wrongdoing is proven, the law will be enforced without exception,” he added.
But Najib stressed that the issue has been heavily politicised by certain Malaysians for their own benefit, adding that there is a possibility that the foreign authorities investigating the matter could have been fed with partial or completely fake information.
