Zahid invites Muslim MPs to special briefing on Hadi’s Bill
(The Star) – A special briefing will be held today for all Muslim lawmakers on the Private Member’s Bill to amend the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act 1965.
A notice signed by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi (pic) said the MPs are welcomed to attend the briefing at 5pm at the Briefing Room of Parliament.
The Bill, previously tabled by PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang, seeks to increase the power of the Syariah courts to impose stiffer penalties except the death sentence.
Several parties have expressed their objections to the Bill, saying the amendments would eventually pave the way for Syariah courts to implement hudud in the states.
PAS secretary-general Datuk Takiyuddin Hassan, when met at the Parliament lobby, confirmed to The Star that the meeting will be held at 5pm.
