Mahathir clobbers MCA, praises DAP

In a political reversal, the former prime minister comes to the defence of the DAP for associating with him and blasts the MCA for supporting Najib, adding today’s MCA is far from that headed by Tan Cheng Lock.

(FMT) – In yet another instant that proves the axiom there are no permanent friends or enemies in politics, former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad today ran down the MCA, and praised the DAP.

When he was Barisan Nasional president, he used to praise the MCA, a coalition partner of Umno, and run down the DAP.

In his latest blog post, the Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia chairman comments on MCA president Liow Tiong Lai’s statement condemning the DAP for working with him.

Liow had said yesterday that PAS, which the DAP had once criticised, had become ‘an angel” in the 2013 general election for the party. The DAP had once called Mahathir a dictator but now Mahathir had become “an angel overnight”, Liow had added.

“I wonder how DAP can face the families of their past leaders who have fought Mahathir and PAS? Where is the moral compass of DAP leadership?” he had asked.

Noting the disgust expressed by Liow that the DAP is now working with him, the former prime minister turned the question back to Liow, and asked where MCA’s principles have gone, for working with prime minister and Umno president Najib Razak.

He asks if the MCA is unaware of “what Najib has done to Umno, BN and the nation. If he is not, I would like to tell him that under Najib Malaysia has been classified as one of the ten most corrupt countries in the world.”

He goes on to talk about the 1Malaysia Development Bhd scandal, the US Department of Justice going after money stolen from 1MDB and its reference to “Malaysian Official 1”.

“Of course the MCA thinks this is okay. That is the MCA’s principle, which it must cling to.”

Saying Najib considers the contest now is between Umno and DAP, he adds: “This means Najib believes in racism because to him Malaysian politics is about Malays versus Chinese. Towards that end he has redrawn constitutional boundaries to separate Malays from Chinese.

“Perhaps this accords with MCA as an ethnic Chinese Party. DAP is a multi-racial party which supports all the provisions of the Malaysian Constitution.”

He then says the DAP supports the monarchical system, Malay special rights, Malay as the national language, and Islam as the official religion of the country.

“Accordingly, the DAP celebration of its 50th anniversary was conducted completely in the national language,” he says.
