Dr Mahathir Mohamad says he won 5 general elections because rivals were disunited.

(FMT) – Former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad has said that he is willing to be the government’s advisor should the opposition win power.

“If they (Pakatan Harapan) take over as government and let me be the consultant, I will do what I can to save the country from the financial problems,” he was quoted by Sin Chew Daily.

He added he is confident that the opposition can resolve the financial woes the country is facing.

The Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM) chairman expressed optimism that the opposition, if in power, can recover at least half of Malaysia’s funds and the other half can be earned back.

“If Prime Minister Najib still in power, the situation will be worse,” he said.

Dr Mahathir revealed that one key reason he could stay in power for 22 years as prime minister and lead Barisan Nasional to win five general elections was that the opposition was not united and strong enough.

He added that to achieve victory, the opposition parties should put aside their differences and focus on their true rival.

Dr Mahathir was speaking to the media at a talk at Alor Setar yesterday. Also present were Alor Setar MP Gooi Hsiao Leung and Pengkalan Kundor assemblyman Phahrolrazi Zawawi. An estimated 1,000 people attended the talk.
