PAS claims 300,000 attended rally on Hadi’s Bill

Supporters attend a rally to support the adoption of a strict Islamic penal code at Padang Merbok in Kuala Lumpur

(MMO) – PAS claimed today that 300,000 people showed up at its rally expressing support for a Shariah Bill, despite police estimates of 20,000.

“Himpunan 355” director Nasrudin Hassan said the Islamist party’s gathering at Padang Merbok here yesterday saw Muslims uniting from various backgrounds.

“The rally that succeeded in gathering 300,000 citizens who love peace and harmony sends a very clear signal that no one can insult Islam.

“Islam is a religion that brings universal justice and harmony among the brethren,” Nasrudin said in a statement.

PAS’ rally to gather support for its president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang’s private member’s Bill to enhance Shariah punishments by amending the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act 1965 (Act 355) saw tens of thousands in the city.

A counter rally was held by a movement called BEBAS in Petaling Jaya that saw about 200 protesters.
