DAP rep agrees with Umno proposal that Guan Eng steps down

(The Star) – Umno may find support from an unlikely ally in its move to table a motion urging Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng to step down when the state assembly sits in May.

DAP’s Tanjung Bungah assemblyman Teh Yee Cheu (pic) said the proposal was “the right thing” to do and it has been his stand from the beginning that Lim should step down following corruption allegations against him.

“At least he should go on a temporary leave until the case is over,” said Teh when asked to comment on the statement by state Umno chief Datuk Seri Zainal Abidin Osman on the proposed motion.

“The Chief Minister has been charged with corruption and as such he should step aside for investigations to continue smoothly,” he said.

This is not the first time Teh has broken ranks with the party in the assembly.

In November 2015, he supported a motion by Umno’s Pulau Betong assemblyman Datuk Muhammad Farid Saad who urged for public hearings for land reclamation and the suspension of all new reclamation until oceanic, environmental and social impact studies were carried out.

Teh later apologised to the party for supporting the motion from Barisan Nasional.

During the meeting in May last year, he brought up a motion to amend the state constitution to limit the Penang chief minister’s term to two terms but was rejected by state assembly Speaker Datuk Law Choo Kiang.

Teh said he would not table the motion again since Umno was proposing to table a motion against Lim.
