Wan Azizah: No problem ‘warming PM seat’ for Anwar

(The Star) – Opposition leader Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail says she has no problem with being a “seat warmer” for her jailed husband Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

“I don’t mind, yeah,” said Dr Wan Azizah to a question by interviewer Mehdi Hasan on Al Jazeera’s UpFront programme.

Al Jazeera aired a minute-long snippet of an interview with Dr Wan Azizah on Friday. The full episode will be aired at 3.30am (Malaysian) on Saturday.

“Frankly, he’s a better leader. He’s a better administrator. He’s a better guy for the job. Why not?” she said when asked why she would give up the prime minister’s post if the Opposition wins.

Mehdi then asked why people would vote for her if she is not going to be prime minister.

Dr Wan Azizah claimed that polls show that Anwar is “the most popular”.

“One of the polls shows that Anwar is the man that is supposed to be the next prime minister,” she said.

Pakatan Harapan has said that Anwar will be prime minister if the Opposition wins in the next general election.

In February 2015, the Federal Court upheld the Court of Appeal’s decision in convicting Anwar of sodomising his former aide Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan.

Anwar was sentenced to five years’ jail for sodomising Mohd Saiful at Desa Damansara condominium in Bukit Damansara on June 26, 2008.

He is currently serving the sentence at Sungai Buloh prison.
