Kit Siang: PAS win must come at Umno’s cost

(MMO) – “For the first time, PAS may end up with more or almost equal number of  parliamentary seats as Umno in Peninsular Malaysia”

PAS’s ambition to contest as many as 100 federal seats and possibly win 40 cannot be realised without collusion or concession from Umno, DAP’s Lim Kit Siang insisted today.

Suggesting a possible electoral arrangement between the two outward rivals, the DAP parliamentary leader said previous results demonstrated that PAS had rarely taken more than a dozen seats when multi-cornered contests occurred.

He further insisted the Islamist party would not be able to win 40 seats even if it did not encounter multi-cornered fights, noting that PAS’s best ever result in 1999 amounted to just 27 seats.

“Without some form of electoral arrangement or alliance between Umno and PAS, it is just not possible for PAS to win five state governments in the 14th general election,” he said in a statement.

Lim suggested that the Islamist party’s current target for the general election due no later than August 2018 raised questions about the possible arrangement between it and Umno.

He also asked how far Umno was prepared to go in order to support the Islamist party’s ambitions.
