Muslim leaders support Hadi’s rebuke against foreign intervention

(NST) – Religious leaders have expressed support for Pas president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang who spoke out against foreign intervention in domestic affairs yesterday.

In an open letter addressed to all political parties, Abdul Hadi said history has shown that foreign meddling destroys countries, as evident in the fall of the Malacca Sultanate.

“I am convinced that those who invite foreign parties to interfere in the country’s affairs solely to win elections (have moralities that lack) gentlemanship,” he said.

Pahang Mufti Datuk Seri Dr Abdul Rahman Osman said history illustrates that Islamic governments have always pursued positive and constructive relations with outsiders.

“From the time of Prophet Muhammad, the relationship (between Islamic governments and outsiders) has always been based on goodwill and without malice towards others.

“Additionally, in Islam, it is not permissible for a Muslim to betray his own country by collaborating with foreign agents,” he told the News Straits Times.

Meanwhile, Malacca state mufti Abdul Halim Tawil said Abdul Hadi’s statement is very clear and should be supported.

He said Malaysians, regardless of race or religion, should not exploit local issues unnecessarily by conspiring with outsiders.

He urged the people to stand together in preventing foreign powers from interfering in the country’s internal affairs.

“We should try to solve our problems using our (own) existing laws.

“Let the authorities such as the police and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) do their job,” he said.

In the letter, Abdul Hadi also stated that all scandals and national crises must be resolved internally, irrespective of how bad the internal system is.

“Do not repeat history by inviting foreign parties to solve our internal problems (which include) BMF (Bumiputra Malaysia Finance), Perwaja, Tabung Haji, Employees Provident Fund (EPF),” he added.
