DAP receives official notification from ROS

The party’s all powerful CEC will meet this Wednesday to discuss it’s contents and issue a statement after that, according to DAP legal bureau chief Gobind Singh Deo

(FMT) -DAP today received official notification from the Registrar of Societies (RoS) regarding the department’s order for the party to hold a fresh election for its central executive committee (CEC).

DAP legal bureau chairman Gobind Singh Deo said the party had been notified through a letter this morning.

In a brief statement, he said the CEC would meet this Wednesday to discuss the letter’s contents.

“A statement will be issued after that,” he added.

Last week, Gobind had hit out at the RoS for failing to provide official notification to DAP of its order to hold fresh party polls.

“We cannot hold a fresh re-election without official communication from the RoS to that effect. That remains my stand in the matter. Forcing us to do so would be most unreasonable,” the Puchong MP had said, adding that the letter was absolutely essential.

On July 7, the RoS said in a media statement that the appointment of CEC members and those who held key positions in DAP via its re-election on Sep 29, 2013 was deemed unlawful.

The re-election should be based on the list of delegates entitled to attend and vote in the CEC election on Dec 15, 2012 which involved 2,576 delegates from 865 branches.

This is because only valid and recognised CEC members can appoint individuals to the main positions, in accordance with the Societies Act 1966 and DAP’s constitution.

Following the statement, DAP held a press conference announcing that it would not hold a fresh election, but would seek a meeting with the RoS.

DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng pointed out that the party had already conducted a re-election in 2013 as directed by the RoS.

Lim added that the party had also informed the RoS of the re-election results, which involved 2,576 qualified delegates.

“Therefore, the question of a fresh election does not arise,” he had said, adding that they were still keen to meet with the RoS, to discuss the issue at hand and the latest decision which came three years after what was thought to be an end to the matter.
