Wan Azizah will back Mahathir probe if PH wins polls

The PKR leader says a government formed by the opposition coalition will investigate ‘everything’, including 1MDB.

(FMT) – PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail says she will support the establishment of a commission to investigate all accusations against Pakatan Harapan (PH) chairman Dr Mahathir Mohamad during his tenure as prime minister.

However, she said this could only be done if PH succeeds in ousting Barisan Nasional (BN) in the next general election.

“Let us win the election first, then we will investigate everything, including 1MDB.

“Why is the government focusing now only on the forex (losses by Bank Negara during Mahathir’s premiership)?

“We will do what the nation needs. Mahathir himself has spoken about an independent investigation and I have agreed to it,” Wan Azizah told reporters in a press conference at Parliament today.

Recently, Putrajaya set up a royal commission of inquiry (RCI) to investigate the central bank’s forex losses in the 1990s.

Putrajaya had said the RCI would recommend appropriate action to be taken against those found to be directly or indirectly involved in the scandal.

The RCI has three months to complete its task and submit a report to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

Mahathir’s former protege and current PH de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim has pledged full cooperation to the RCI, while Mahathir himself said he was willing to be investigated.

On a separate matter, Wan Azizah, who is also the PH president, admitted that there was some unhappiness among PKR grassroots and opposition supporters over Mahathir’s inclusion in the coalition.

“But the four parties agreed to have Mahathir as chairman. They (the supporters) can disagree, but we need to move forward.”

Apart from PKR and PPBM, PH also comprises DAP and Amanah.
