PAS to push for RCI on Memali

The Islamic party intends to get families of those involved in the incident submit an official request for the RCI

(Berita Daily) –  PAS will bring the families of those involved in the Memali incident in 1985 to meet Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

Its secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan said the meeting will allow PAS and the families to submit an official request for the setting up a Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) to probe the incident, which left 18 people dead.

He said the meeting will be held as soon as possible, considering the Memali tragedy happened 32 years ago.

“PAS supports the government’s willingness to form the RCI to investigate the tragedy which happened on Nov 19, 1985 as it is in accordance with the Federal Constitution.

“PAS has also set up a legal team to handle all the matters related to the affected Memali families, including bringing them to meet with the deputy prime minister,” he said in a statement, today.

Takiyuddin said the legal team, which consists Pas legal experts, was set up during a Pas central committee meeting last night.

It was reported that the government is ready to form RCI to investigate the Memali incident.

Zahid, who is also home minister, had said the RCI would be formed if there were requests from people or organisations which had links to the incident.
