DAP insults late Sultan of Kedah

(Malaysiakini) – As the nation mourned the passing of Kedah’s Sultan Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah, a pro-opposition Facebook page courted flak over a posting which depicted the late ruler and his consort with Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak and his wife Rosmah Mansor.

The posting, which has since been removed, was first uploaded by the Facebook page “Tak Nak BN.” It was then shared by another page comprising supporters of DAP lawmaker Nga Kor Ming.

According to Facebook user Muhamad Harris Nasril, the post captioned “perdana menteri & suaminya” (the prime minister and her husband) was uploaded at 7.47pm yesterday, hours after news broke regarding the sultan’s passing.

Muhamad Harris noted that Nga’s supporters page had removed the offending post after it drew flak from netizens who called for respect to be shown for the late sultan.

He also urged Taiping voters to reject Nga in the next general election.

In the past, Nga had distanced himself from similarly controversial postings made by his supporters on Facebook.

Meanwhile, MCA central committee member Ti Lian Ker described the posting as a “new low” for DAP.

“Although the posting has since been deleted as a result of an uproar by netizens accusing DAP of being insensitive, despicable and of the most horrible taste, the netizens are so angry that they are still criticising them for the now deleted post,” he said in a statement.

Ti also urged Nga to apologise to the Kedah royal family over this matter.

“Denying, ignoring or keeping silent over what happened on social media will just reaffirm that DAP has no respect for the federal constitution and the royal institution,” he said.

Sultan Abdul Halim passed away at 2.30pm yesterday at Istana Anak Bukit in Kedah at the age of 89.
